How To Develop a Healthy Eating Plan

A healthy eating plan is a surefire way to adopting a healthy eating lifestyle. Without it, changing old habits can seem overwhelming. Here is a look at what most typical plates of food may look like at our own tables, or when we dine out.

As you can see in a typical plate of food that we may eat, it usually is dominated by not so healthy carbs. That can be a nice serving of rice pilaf, some savory homemade macaroni and cheese, or those garlic mashed potatoes you were craving. Then the protein source is incorporated with that. The protein can come from a lean cut of meat, chicken, seafood, or a dairy item. Most meals that are typically eaten are dominated by these two items. Perhaps a small serving of vegetables or beans are included in this meal. Does this meal sound or look familiar to you?

This particular model is more conducive to a healthy eating plan. There are more healthy carbs on this plate. Those can include cauliflower with mozzarella cheese, spaghetti squash with tomato sauce, or spinach with garlic and pine nuts. Just to name a few flavorful healthy carb choices. Notice we have not cut out the carbs altogether in this particular plate of food. It is kept to a minimum and allows you to still enjoy some of the comfort foods that we all know and love.

Ultimately we would like to eat more like this particular model. That does not mean we need to sacrifice taste, creativity, or variety when it comes to our food. It just means that we can diminish some of those carbs that may be filling, and that we are used to. But they do not contribute much in the way of nutrients, vitamins, and minerals that our body can utilize to the fullest. The protein component can still be obtained from seafood, meats, and poultry. This also increases the variety in the type of meals we can create on a daily basis.

A healthy eating plan is not just about what is on our plates. It also involves how often we eat to regulate our body's metabolism. An ideal healthy eating plan would have us eating 5-6 times a day, approximately every 2-3 hours. Does that sound intimidating?

It is quite normal for it to seem that way. Most of us have been used to having breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Sometimes breakfast is skipped for the sake of time. This is actually the worst things we can do. Eating breakfast is the most important thing we can do to jumpstart our body and our metabolism on any given day.

Here is an example of what a typical day can look that is comprised of eating 5-6 times a day.

The concept of the snack has been introduced here. You can see some examples of snacks as part of a healthy eating plan here. This is an integral part of maintaining a healthy eating plan, because we must always keep the body fueled and working. This concept can be referred to as the A.B.E principle (Always Be Eating). Typically when we want to lose weight, or cleanse ourselves, or go on a "healthy kick", we tend to cut back and cut out eating. The body adapts to this and ultimately reverses the effects of these dramatic cutbacks. Not to mention that by eating less we deprive our bodies of essential energy and nutrients that the body utilizes to function normally. You can actually see some actual meals and snacks shown here.
